Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the story of her family through the other protagonist, El

It's Monday! What are you reading? -- Feb 22, 2010

It's Monday! What are you reading this week?
This is a weekly event initially hosted by J. Kaye at J. Kaye's Book Blog, now by Sheila @ One Persons Journey through a world of Books, to celebrate what you are reading for the week as well as books completed the previous week.

Books completed last week
- The Help by Kathryn Stockett
- The 13th Hour by Richard Doetsch (Review coming up soon!)
- Open Season by Linda Howard (Review coming up soon!)

Unfinished
- The Chopin Manuscript by Jeffery Deaver and 14 other writers: I decided to give up on this, since after 1.5 hours of audio, it still was not holding my interest. I'm sorry to not put on more effort on this, but maybe I'll give it a try some other time.

I am currently reading

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien: This is a re-read that I am doing for the LOTR Readalong. I totally LOVE this series and plan to watch the movie after finishing this read.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch: I've heard this is depressing. I just started it a while back and so far the book is very interesting. I am reading this with a pen-pal, Cheryl.

My reading plans for the next week

Liar by Justine Larbalestier: I've read more controversies regarding this book's cover issue than reviews, and that's pretty sad, so to speak. I just saw this audio book available, and decided to grab it right away (Result of my new plan to be more impulsive and less obsessive).

The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs: The rest of the group with whom I am reading this book already completed it at the start of this month. I had to renew this at the library once since it was due last week. I'll hopefully be starting this over the coming weekend.

Oooh, I read White Oleander a long time ago, and don't remember much about it, but I do remember enjoying it! I hope Liar is a good book despite all the controversy surrounding its cover.
Good luck with the impulsive thing! That's how I almost always read. :-) I enjoyed your review of The Help and look forward to your other reviews. Enjoy your reading this week!

I read White Oleander years ago and don't really remember it being depressing. Of course, I do tend to like books like that. I can't wait to see what you think of it.

Open Season is one of my favorite Linda Howard books. Did you like it? I suppose I should just wait for the review. =)

I have The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs among my TBR books.

Great books! My hubby did his senior thesis on Tolkien and loved it.

I actually have The Friday Night Knitting Club on my TBR book shelf, but haven't been able to get to it. Hopefully your review will make me more eager to dust it off!

Liar is soooooo good. It's too bad that the story itself is being overshadowed by all the controversy talk on the internet

I never finished White Oleander, for some reason it bored me stiff, and I'm not sure why. The Fellowship, however, could be read innumerable times, and I'd never tire of it. Ever.

dolcebelleza, Sorry to hear that you struggled with White Oleander. I got bored of it too for a moment, but hope the pace will pick up soon!
