Not just have a farmer's market as an afterthought, but make it the main staple. Even retail chains can help by trying to be more local and less global. We all have our own Walmarts, Sams Clubs/ Costcos, etc. These retail chains could try to infuse a bit of the local taste into their products and not put up too many shipped products.Athira / Athshttp://www.readingonarainyday.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6318555580612720798.post-19059944546635882362011-03-13T11:18:35.738-04:002011-03-13T11:18:35.738-04:00I agree. But we've rarely considered the effects of our action - we need to assume that something could go wrong, and start paying attention to that.Athira / Athshttp://www.readingonarainyday.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6318555580612720798.post-53996941630388245882011-03-13T11:17:36.087-04:002011-03-13T11:17:36.087-04:00Much as I am a fan of advancements, I think we do ...Much as I am a fan of advancements, I think we do need to slow down a bit. Local produce is one of the biggest issues in the environmental movement. Eating local foods is better for our health and our economy (not to mention the environmental impact). This is the topic I am most passionate about and we're planning on featuring a book about these issues very soon.ashbruxhttp://www.englishmajorjunkfood.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6318555580612720798.post-32795845818731485482011-02-25T20:13:32.761-05:002011-02-25T20:13:32.761-05:00Jason and I were just talking about a lot these th...Jason and I were just talking about a lot these things tonight. I said this in my post but I'll say it again here-- I'm lucky to work with someone who can express all of these ideas so eloquently! And you are so right about these things. We have become way too obsessed with growth, which is why our cities are growing out instead of up, which causes a lot of the problems that need to be fixed.ashbruxhttp://www.englishmajorjunkfood.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6318555580612720798.post-482138908154553752011-02-25T18:23:57.234-05:002011-02-25T18:23:57.234-05:00I would love if we stopped advancing so fast ;)I would love if we stopped advancing so fast ;)Juju at Tales of Whimsy...noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6318555580612720798.post-64497926644047892212011-02-25T08:59:01.142-05:002011-02-25T08:59:01.142-05:00The last century is one of such massive advancemen...The last century is one of such massive advancement in medicine, science, technology (and yes, weaponry). I, too, cannot imagine a time without those advancements and more. However, maintaining what we've got, making people's lives better (read: fixing poverty), and paying attention to the effects of our actions seems equally importanthcmurdochnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6318555580612720798.post-27747378137045019202011-02-25T08:35:05.644-05:002011-02-25T08:35:05.644-05:00I think we've all become so spoiled, we're...I think we've all become so spoiled, we're not used to making sacrifices. One way we could help our environment is eating local foods. Do we really need to have fruits and vegetables shipped from halfway around the world when they're out of season here? I think we also need to concentrate on re-using more too. Great post, Aths!bermudaonion (Kathy)http://bermudaonion.net/noreply@blogger.com
