Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the story of her family through the other protagonist, El

It's Monday! What are you reading? -- Mar 01, 2010

It's Monday! What are you reading this week?
This is a weekly event initially hosted by J. Kaye at J. Kaye's Book Blog, now by Sheila @ One Persons Journey through a world of Books, to celebrate what you are reading for the week as well as books completed the previous week.

Books completed last week
- The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien - Re-read for the LOTR Read-along

Books reviewed from the week before
- The 13th Hour by Richard Doetsch
- Open Season by Linda Howard

I am currently reading

Liar by Justine Larbalestier: I have to say this book is pretty interesting, though the narrator's shrilly dialogues are irritating my ears. I'm only on disk 2, with 7 more left, and I listen an hour a day (when I hit the gym) so hopefully, I will complete this one within 7 gym days.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch: I couldn't get into this the first time, so I took a short break and returned back to it. I hope I'll complete this one this week itself.

My reading plans for the next week

Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel: I'm reading this one for the Spotlight Series, and am interested in this book for its theme as well - depression, obsession and compulsiveness. My review will come up only on March 23rd, but with a paper due on March 22nd, I don't want to wait till then to read it.

The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs: My slow last week didn't get me to this book as soon as I expected, but hopefully, this weekend will be spent on this one.

Looking forward to reading your review on Liar. The shrilly narrator is another reason I tend to not listen to books. Have a great week.

I met a young social worker who told me she chose her field in part because of White Orelander.

I listen to audio books while exercising too. Sometimes it is so good that I exercise longer to listen longer!

I learned a LOT from White Oleander! It's disturbing. I think they did a decent job with the movie, too. AND I really look forward to your thots on Last Night in Montreal. :)

I've heard good things about White Oleander, but it sounds like it might be a little too intense for my tastes. Definitely want to read The Friday Night Knitting Club, though. Hope you enjoy all your reads this week.

I've heard only raves for Last Night in Montreal but there's something that keeps holding me back from reading it myself. Can't quite put my finger on it.
I just picked up 13th Hour from the library and I was wondering why I requested it. I didnt even know if it was an error.... but now seeing your review of it here I remember it was your review that caused me to put a gold on the book. :)

Have a super weekend!
