My troubles with Indian fiction | Notes from my Reading

I've been going through a reading spree. Over the past four weeks. I completed five books and am halfway through my sixth. This is huge for me. I'm not sure how long it will last, but if a slump comes through, that's alright - at least I'm having a good run at the moment.
Indian fictionI don't read as many books written by Indian-origin authors or set in India or featuring Indian-origin characters as I want to. Part of it is due to poor track record so far - a lot of the same tropes keep showing up. When you know something intimately, it gets hard to look past the tropes. There are some books that I have loved and I could find more books by those authors, so part of the blame is on me and not the books. I've also not done well about reading Indian authors though I have quite a large collection of such books. This past week, I spent some time to find a book featuring Indian-American characters. I was intentionally looking for a light and fun read. (Mainly I was c…

Look at what just arrived! - September 20, 2010

mailboxmonday This meme was originally hosted by Marcia @ The Printed Page. It went on tour beginning August '10 and is hosted this month by Bermudaonion's Weblog. It is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week (checked out library books don’t count, eBooks & audio books do).

So after a few good weeks, my mailbox has been slowing down. I'm taking it as a good thing, because I do need to put my shelf into perspective and read more. I got two books this week, both of which I am very excited about.

Right now, Room by Emma Donoghue is probably one of the most talked about books. I don't usually go by the Booker or the Pulitzer raves. I like to read about them and then put them on my TBR, but by the time I pick the book to read, it could be ages. Which is why I wasn't initially interested in Room. But then all the hype around this book made me not want to miss out on it. Oh yeah, I know how the hype usually has the opposite effect on me when I actually start reading the book. But, I still like to have the option to read it. This one came to me thanks to an awesome blogger buddy - Danielle @ There's a Book. She had two copies of this book, and was kind and wonderful enough to give me one of them! Yay!

The other book that came in was The Caliph's House: A Year in Casablanca by Tahir Shah. I first heard of this one in Alyce's blog, At Home with Books. Then Helen @ Helen's Book Blog reviewed it. After seeing this book twice, I was all ready to add it to my wishlist, when Helen did a giveaway and I won! So, now I'm going to be reading it for the Middle East Reading Challenge.

Have you read any of these books?

I enjoyed Room, but I have to tell you that it takes a little while to adjust to the young narrator's voice. Enjoy your new books!

I'm not sure about Room either, but more because of the plot (not the buzz). I look forward to reading your review!
I have Room here also. The hype is making me a bit nervous. I hate it when I don't like a book that everyone loves loves. I'm hoping Room stands up to all of the hype. I hope we both enjoy it!
