My troubles with Indian fiction | Notes from my Reading

I've been going through a reading spree. Over the past four weeks. I completed five books and am halfway through my sixth. This is huge for me. I'm not sure how long it will last, but if a slump comes through, that's alright - at least I'm having a good run at the moment.
Indian fictionI don't read as many books written by Indian-origin authors or set in India or featuring Indian-origin characters as I want to. Part of it is due to poor track record so far - a lot of the same tropes keep showing up. When you know something intimately, it gets hard to look past the tropes. There are some books that I have loved and I could find more books by those authors, so part of the blame is on me and not the books. I've also not done well about reading Indian authors though I have quite a large collection of such books. This past week, I spent some time to find a book featuring Indian-American characters. I was intentionally looking for a light and fun read. (Mainly I was c…

The Sunday Salon (Yawn, can someone do my taxes please?) -- February 27, 2011

The Sunday
Salon.com

Wherever did this month disappear off to?

I feel this Sunday came too soon. It's been a really crazy hectic week, and I'm surprised that I still managed to blog every day of this week. I'm really behind on my reviews, so I did want to put out as many reviews as possible. It doesn't help that I've been reading a lot of graphic novels. They finish too soon and are still so well-done as any other full-length novel that when you start reviewing them, you give them a full-length post.

Still, it's been a good week, even with the busy days. I've been reading more - in boring lines, at work when I need a brief perk-up, and even while watching some movie or TV show. I never used to read like that earlier, because I always did get a dedicated block of time to read, but now that's not so easily available. There's always something or the other to do at home.

Oh yeah, something or the other for sure. Let's say, taxes? ::groan:: I still haven't done that. I'm pretty notorious for starting them when the deadline looms too close. But I'm hoping to break free of that tradition and get it done today. What a boring chore! I know I could just ask any of those free tax-preparers to do them for me, but the last person who did that for me cheated me and a friend out of some 200 bucks due to her laziness to peruse our W2 forms. So, I had to learn a nasty lesson the nasty way. I did get all that money back eventually, but that's not the point, is it? The point is, I had to do all that sordid stuff all on my own in the end, which was precisely what I was hoping to avoid. I have to do my brother's too, and he doesn't have a worry in the world about it because he knows I'll do that nasty stuff for him too! Ugh! So much for being a sister.

On the plus side, I love times when the whole family reads. I've always relished that I grew up reading most of the time, and that even my mother and brother would do the same. My brother lost that habit at some point, when he went to TV and games, but I cured him within a week of his landing here. Yay, *pat on my back*.

So while I yawn my way through taxes, what's everyone else doing?

Booo taxes.

Thank goodness Mr. Whimsy does them for us.

Good luck. Happy week.
I hate taxes. We've done ours, but need to review them, so we can file them.

I tried my hand at Turbotax for the first time this year and it really seemed so easy! I didn't have to think too much at all!

I still have mine to file, shucks, yawn!

At least you have completed them? I did them but still have to file them. :(

Boy, I can imagine how hard it is for you. I feel so bad about complaining! It's actually an easy process for me, but just boring. It's all very straightforward otherwise. I have done them but still have to file them.
