Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the story of her family through the other protagonist, El

Yet another Monday! (February 21, 2011)

It's Monday! What are you reading this week?

SheilaOne Persons Journey through a world of Books wants to know what we're reading. I'm only too happy to oblige!

This post is taking me a while to put up. I just finished watching Hotel Rwanda, and am still pretty dazed, shocked and angry. I'm also thinking about Egypt and wondering why freeedom is such a hard thing to have. So while I try to set these thoughts aside, let me think about the books I read this week.

Books completed in the last week
-  The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown: What a beautiful writing! You always need that in character-driven novels, and this book certainly had it!
-  Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun by Geoffrey Canada: A well-done graphic novel set in Harlem and with a really good insight into the almost-lawless streets where Canada grew up in.
-  Stitches by David Small: This was such a fast read, I was amazed. It was certainly moving too - adopting the idea that pictures can say so much more than words.

News from over my blog
Books on my nightstand
I did some compulsion-free reading last week, but this week is going to be governed again by review and tour deadlines. I need to do this more often. Since I haven't yet checked what review dates are coming up, these are the books on my radar right now.

BehemothBehemoth by Scott Westerfeld: This book is just as interesting as it's prequel, Leviathan. The next book, Goliath, is coming out on Sept 13th, so I'm really looking forward to it - it's the last book of this trilogy. Of course, I won't be surprised if a fourth book is also released, since we all know that only Scott Westerfeld can get away with four books in a trilogy!
Shadow TagShadow Tag by Louise Erdrich: I've been hearing a lot about this book - both good and bad. But my interest is piqued! I haven't read any of Louise Erdrich's earlier works, this one sounds intense as it is, so I can't wait to find out.

Oh! You are reading some great books! I had no idea there was a graphic novel version for Anne Frank's Biography. How interesting! And I've really wanted to read Stitches for some time.

Have a fabulous reading week and if you get a second stop by There’s A Book! :)

I have The Weird Sisters on Sparky, my Kindle...and can't wait to dive in! Shadow Tag was an intriguing read...parts of it were tedious, to me, but overall...good. Hope you enjoy your week.

Here's MY MONDAY MEMES post.

Yeah, I heard parts of Shadow Tag was tedious to read. I'm concerned about that, but I may still give it a try. For now, I had to postpone the read, thanks to two reviews due next week.
