Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. The Sunday Salon: Book Sale!

The Sunday
Salon.com

Good morning, Sunday Saloners! It's been cold this weekend, more so than usual, and that's messed with the routine a bit. The weather is perfect for relaxing by the fire pit in our backyard, and reading on the iPad, as we did last night.

Yesterday, we visited a farm about a half hour from here and did a nice farm tour to see the animals they had. Despite living in Central-Southwest Virginia for five years now, I had never been to a farm in the US. It was quite nice to see a non-commercialized animal farm and trust that there are places that breed and rear animals in a much humane way. Of course, as the husband pointed out to me, they all go to the slaughterhouse eventually, so it's not much consolation. It was sad though when we passed by their turkey enclosures, knowing that they're going to be in the store's poultry section in a month.

On Friday, we had a Friends of the Library book sale. The husband, brother and I bought home quite a good pile. Even before I had browsed through the first rack, the husband had already picked up his books and was ready to bill. (What!!) Anyways, here's what we picked.

1. I Don't Know How She Does it by Allison Pearson
2. No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
3. The Road by Cormac McCarthy (even though I already have an ebook version of this one)
4. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
5. The Book Of Lost Things by John Connolly
6. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
7. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

8. Bag of Bones by Stephen King
9. Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub
10. War Stories II by Oliver North (The husband digs war and military stories...)
11. The Healthy Kitchen by Andrew Weil and Rosie Daley
12. The Science Fiction Bestiary by Robert Silverberg (...and science fiction)
13. The Year's Best Science Fiction by Gardner Dozois

Of the lot, I'm most excited about Gillian Flynn's book. I can't wait to browse through the Andrew Weil cookbook as well. More than his recipes, I like to read about his thoughts behind the recipes. His cookbooks tend to be very thought-provoking and inspiring.

I'm still reading through Monsters of Men which is leaving me with very little incentive to log onto my PC. It's a huge book, and I'm only halfway through it, but it does feel like a good read so far.

How's your day shaping up?

The best book sales are Friends of the Library book sales, best choice, best price.
By the way, in my opinion, DARK PLACES is better than GONE GIRL.

I didn't go to any book sales but I snagged Dark Places and Sharp Objects from the library. I am not sure it's the right time for me to read them but I have 'em. Maybe I will start one this weekend.

I took a few pictures, but nothing major. I really struggled getting a picture that gave a proper feel to the place.

What a wonderful haul! Often, used book sales don't offer up such a lovely suggestion. In my experience, anyway. The Book of Lost Things is one from your stack that I read and really enjoyed.

I did have a hard job finding some good ones in the pile. I felt at first that maybe I'll go home with only one book. I'm picky about the books I buy too. But eventually, it worked out fine. Phew.
