It was a tough toss choosing between The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R.Tolkien and White Oleander by Janet Fitch, for the teaser this week. Finally, I chose the one that sounded more suspenseful! He broke a windowpane. I could tell he hadn't intended to because he hesitated, and then, in a sudden burst of courage, he thrust his arm through the window and fumbled for the latch. Before I share the teaser, I want to mention an interesting specific of the book. There are only 13 chapters in this book (338 pages), but the interesting fact is the book starts at chapter 12, and counts down to chapter 1, finally ending on chapter 13. That feels to me a curious structure for the book, and I'm interested to see how the author pulls off the going-to-the-past stunt in one hour increments to change something that happened, which, as we know from the experience of reading time travel books, is a violation of time traveling, as the past has never been subject to change (except maybe in LOST ::wink::). I started City of Bones yesterday and found it pleasantly good. I'm not too far in, but the first few pages made a good enough impression on me that I'm looking forward to reading it. I found plenty of excellent teasers already, but most of them have to be read in context. So I settled for one towards the beginning of the first chapter.
