Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the story of her family through the other protagonist, El

It's Monday! What are you reading? -- Feb 15, 2010

It's Monday! What are you reading this week?
This is a weekly event initially hosted by J. Kaye at J. Kaye's Book Blog, now by Sheila @ One Persons Journey through a world of Books, to celebrate what you are reading for the week as well as books completed the previous week.

Books completed last week
Zilch! :-( I even went whole days without reading! It was just too busy!

Books reviewed from the week before
- Rainwater by Sandra Brown
- City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

I am currently reading

RainwaterThe Help by Kathryn Stockett: I probably will complete this book before this post is up, but at the moment, I have the last 150 pages to finish. I am totally loving this book! The prejudices and racial tensions of those times, the politicians playing the race card too often, Martin Luther King's much anticipated walk, the struggle to win equality - all these elements can be felt through the book, and more than once, I could find parallels between the events in the book and some events of today, though in different contexts. It's definitely an eye-opener.

Open Season by Linda Howard: I can't say I'm really enjoying this. It's not boring or even bad, but it's dragging, and once I finish with The Help, I will be hoping that the pace of this book fastens!

My reading plans for the next week

RainwaterThe 13th Hour by Richard Doetsch: This book is due back in the library on Thursday, So I'll have to do some speed reading and finish this off by then. I definitely want to read it, since I've waited two months for this thriller.

Not my DaughterPrecious / Push by Sapphire: This one is due on Friday. But luckily, it's only 192 pages. I guess I can finish it in a few hours.

I didn't realise that Precious/Push was so short! That makes me more interested in reading it...the subject matter is so dark, I've never really wanted to give it a try. But hopefully I could handle it for 200 pages.

So glad you're loving (loved?) The Help. It was one of my favorites last year!

I imagine you're busy all the time, so you must have been super busy last week! You can read Push quickly, but it will leave you stunned.

Looks like you have a pretty good reading week planned. Hope you have some time to sit down with a good book or two!
I borrowed Push from my cousin and only managed to read half of it before she needed it back. It's so sad, and very disturbing. But it's a great read. Hope you like it!

Great review on Rainwater. So thorough. I wish I could do reviews like that. Told me exactly what I needed to know.

Loved The Help, and I love your comment about "zilch." I've been glued to the Olympics on TV since Friday and haven't read one page since then. Luckily I read a bit before then :) Have a great week.

I've seen a lot about Cassandra Claire's books and they look good. Haven't had a chance to read them yet though.

Don't know much about any of the other books on your list though. Here's hoping you enjoy them.
