Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the...

Mostly Nonfiction February

After a shaky reading start in February, I found my groove back sometime during the middle of the month. I guess what helped was the many graphic nonfiction books I found at the library. Honestly, there's nothing that can pull you back into reading than a riveting story told in pictures. Overall, my February reading was pretty good. Most of the titles I read this month are nonfiction. I don't think I've ever read more nonfiction than fiction over a month ever before.

Traveling with my books this year
Lately, I seem to enjoy reading books set outside the US. I hope the trend continues - it feels wonderful learning more about other countries.

You ended up having a great month in books! I love to read books set in other countries, too. Since I won't make it to many of them in real life, I have to do it vicariously.

I'm so glad for books. I want to travel more, but since I probably won't, I'm glad there are books like these to get lost in. I feel like I know a lot about such countries too.

This past month, though I didn't read much at all, was full of nonfiction as well. I read The Devil in the White City, Manhunt, and The Bolter and enjoyed every single one of them, which tells me I need to be on the lookout for more.

Behemoth is on my nighstand to begin this evening!

Sometimes I accidentally discover that I've read more memoirs or historical F/NF or graphic books in a month and then I wonder why I never checked them out that much earlier! I'm really surprised to see less fiction on my reading list last month.
