Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the story of her family through the other protagonist, El

Books on my nightstand
I have a couple of ARCs that I plan to get to this week. I'm trying to clear off a stack of ARCs that I didn't have a chance to read earlier, and am finally excited to get to.

The Gin ClosetThe Gin Closet by Leslie Jamison: A few months ago, I had seen this book in a lot of blogs and been intrigued by it. So I'm glad to finally get the chance to pick it and read.
Cross CurrentsCross Currents by John Shors: I had been looking forward to reading this book with mixed expectations. On one hand, the topic of the 2004 tsunami (which I hear has a small appearance in this book), hits very close to home, since I was staying at a beach where the tsunami made a grazing pass. On the other hand, the plot of the book also sounds very intriguing.

I was intrigued by The Gin Closet when it came out but never got around to reading it. I'll be curious to see what you think of it. I've got Cross Currents on my shelf to finish by the end of the year too. Enjoy!

I had heard that The Gin Closet was a very good read, and I am also hoping to make time for Cross Currents very soon as well. Both really wonderful choices for this week. I hope that you enjoy them both, Aths!

I'm so glad I didn't either. I was on a beach in India staying with my family when the tsunami struck. Water came just up to the road, but a beach just 5-10 minutes away was fully washed out and people died there. So I'm thankful nothing worse happened.
