Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. The Sunday Salon: RIP

Three weeks ago, my mother-in-law passed away. She was a brave woman, as my father used to say, who had been fighting cancer for more than ten years. Towards the end however, her cancer had spread too far. My husband had already been in India for two weeks when she passed away. I had been planning to join him a little later, believing that she was getting better. But that wasn't meant to be, so to my regret, I never got to see her before she moved on. Rest in Peace, Ma.

It has been quite busy since then. My whole trip itself was spread across just a week, of which about 80 hours involved back-breaking travel between the countries. I have been terribly sick for about two weeks since, and am only just coming out of the woods. All in all, I'm glad to be feeling much better now, but I have a lot of catching up (everywhere) to do.

There is also another very time-consuming activity that the husband and I have been keeping busy with most evenings over the past week - since nothing is decided on this yet, I'll hold off talking about it until then (hard as that is). But that said activity has been keeping me away from my books as well, so really, I haven't been reading much and I keep hoping that someday I'll slip back into my non-existent routine.

What have I missed in the blogosphere? It's time for another 'Mark all as Read' but hopefully, things won't be as hectic for a while now. (Touchwood!)

I am so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law, but am glad your husband got to spend the last two weeks with her. This summer has been so busy for us and with school beginning in two weeks I am hoping to have a little down time for myself. Glad you are starting to feel better!

I am sorry for your loss too. The "mark all as read" option is very liberating and you shouldn't feel guilty for pulling it out. That's what it's there for. Hope your life slows down a bit and that you feel better soon.

I am sorry for the loss of your MIL. I lost a good friend one month ago, and I am still trying to make sense of it. I know how lonesome and weird it can feel to grieve. If you need someone to talk to, drop me an email. My ears and eyes are always open for you, my friend.

Oh, I'm so sorry to read about this. My thoughts and hugs go out to you and your family and your husband. Don't worry about marking all the blogs as read in your Reader; sometimes we just have to do that and it certainly relieves a lot of unnecessary stress during our personal difficult times. If you need anything at all, please let me know.
So sorry to hear that about your mother in law. Hugs!
