Infinite Country by Patricia Engel | Thoughts

Published : 2021   ||    Format : print   ||    Location : Colombia ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆   What was it about the country that kept everyone hostage to its fantasy? The previous month, on its own soil, an American man went to his job at a plant and gunned down fourteen coworkers, and last spring alone there were four different school shootings. A nation at war with itself, yet people still spoke of it as some kind of paradise.. Thoughts : Infinite Country follows two characters - young Talia, who at the beginning of this book, escapes a girl’s reform school in North Colombia so that she can make her previously booked flight to the US. Before she can do that, she needs to travel many miles to reach her father and get her ticket to the rest of her family. As we follow Talia’s treacherous journey south, we learn about how she ended up in the reform school in the first place and why half her family resides in the US. Infinite Country tells the story of her family through the other protagonist, El

What I've been Reading! (Oct 15, 2012)

It's Monday! What are you reading this week?

Sheila @ Book Journey wants to know what we're reading. I'm only too happy to oblige!

It's been a while since I did this meme, mostly because I haven't really read much, but also because I haven't blogged much either. As usual, I'm tossing between more than two books currently - my mood's been a little fluctuating lately.

What the Zhang Boys Know Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You to Know

Both What the Zhang Boys Know by Clifford Garstang and Things your Dog Doesn't Want you to Know by Hy Conrad and Jeff Johnson are for the TLC Book Tour, and I'm enjoying both. What the Zhang Boys Know is almost a short story collection, except each chapter is narrated by one among a group of inter-related people. The latter is as delightful as the cover and title seem to suggest. The husband and I had quite a chuckle from some stories, because we could see ourselves in some of them easily. I'm also rereading the first Harry Potter book for the umpteenth time, because fall always makes me want to read the series.

Which pages were turned...
Over the last two weeks, I finished the following books:
-  The Secret Keeper by Mitali Perkins: I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped to, but it was fast-paced and occasionally intriguing.
-  Gathering of Waters by Bernice L. McFadden: I enjoyed this book a lot - not as much as her previous Sugar and Glorious, but still a lot.
-  How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran: Moran is hilarious in this book! I'm glad to have finally read this.

...And other news
-  Review: Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli
-  Review: My Friend Dahmer (Derf Backderf) and When I Found You (Catherine Ryan Hyde)
-  Review: Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie
-  Review: The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

Happy reading!

I've got to get a couple copies of the dog book - one for my brother in law and one for me, sounds wonderful.
you have some interesting books listed - Spinelli is a great writer, we have a lot of his books in the school library.

Have a great reading week

The dog book looks like a fun read - I might have to get that for my husband! I've been wanting to reread the Harry Potter books for a while now - and might try the audio the second time around...I've heard really good things about them on audio.

Have a great week!

Apparently, the dogs have a lot to say and some are embarrassing me because they do sound so much more intelligent lol!

I hope you enjoy the Dog book. I will be looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

It is fun! Some stories are a bit sad but overall, they are great.

I've heard that the audio is great! I would try them too if I had longer commute times. 10 minutes of travel a day seems too tiny. :)

That book was fun! I hope you enjoy it.

I really enjoy Bernice McFadden's books. Glad you enjoyed Gathering of Waters.

She is becoming one of my favorite authors. I have to read a few more of her works.
Oh the second one looks adorable.
Isn't it wild all the things dogs see?
I often wonder what they will say to me if it's true that dogs go to heaven and I will see them up there.

I definitely don't want to know the things my dogs don't want me to know, lol. I can only imagine the kinds of things they can't tell me!

I always think of Harry Potter during the fall as well, probably because it's sorting hat time!

Me too! Sometimes I sit and chat non-stop with my dog and wonder what she must be thinking of this woman who won't shut up. Lol!

Sorting hat and warm hearths and wintry walks and icy cold lake all make me want to read Harry Potter in fall/winter.

Looks like you've had some good reading and productive reviewing lately.

Thanks! I'm hoping to clean up my backlog soon.

That dog book looks very cute! I have a hard time resisting Harry Potter books. I'm currently listening to book five when I clean the house.

I hope to one year listen to the Harry Potter audio books rather than read them. I've heard they are really good.

I just finished Where We Belong, and have already gotten engrossed in The Passage. I can't wait to really dig deeper and see where all these plot threads meet! Those two Boston Terriers on the cover of that book look like my babies...when they were babies!!

I Hope I get a copy soon - have to buy it first. :), hopefully next month. It really seems like the book you need when you want some laughs
Athira / Aths said…
I need to finish reading The Passage from where I left off last year. Oops! I'm glad that you are loving it.
Athira / Aths said…
Yeah, it's pretty funny sometimes. Some stories are sad but not Marley-and-Me-sad. But overall really light and fun.

I saw "How to be a Woman" in a bookstore and read a few pages. I think I may have to buy it, even though I said to myself no more books this year. Those pages were too funny! Did you review the book?
